ARTHUR WESLEY DOW (1857-1922)Dow, noted American artist and arts educator, attended the Academie Julian in Paris. In a career defining move in 1893 he was made an assistant curator of Japanese art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. That experience influenced his art production and teaching career. His 1899 manual, Composition: A Series of Exercises in Art And Structure became an art school staple. He taught at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League, NY, and founded the Ipswich Summer School of Art in 1900. From 1904 to 1922 he taught at the Columbia University Teachers College. Albert Heckman was one of his students.
